CHARACTER
NAME: Kagura
CANON: Inuyasha
CANON POINT: Final Act episode 2, right after her death
AGE: She’s an adult. The specifics are a little more complicated. Chronologically, Kagura has been alive for less than two years, but she was created fully formed with the body of a young adult (she appears to be about 19) and with the mental capacity of her creator - who is approximately 73-75 years old.

BACKGROUND: https://inuyasha.fandom.com/wiki/Kagura

PERSONALITY: In order to understand Kagura, one must understand a few basic details about her life. She was created, fully formed, by a sadistic, petty and manipulative being who’s more monster than man. Her purpose? To be a tool. Naraku doesn’t like to fight directly, preferring to set traps or let others do the dirty work for him. He has no regard for her life, setting her up to test the strength of his opponents without warning her of what they can do in advance. He’s able to summon Kagura’s heart into his hand to squeeze it, and does this to remind her that he literally holds her life in his hands every time he thinks she needs to be put into her place. He’s also quite aware of her regenerative capabilities, and factors this in when he decides to punish her.

Given that she was spawned from such a cruel person, it’s not surprising that Kagura shares a few of his traits. She can be vicious, shrewd, and manipulative. She has no problem with using others, although given what Naraku can do to her on a whim, she’s at a major disadvantage when it comes to killing him herself. This doesn’t stop her from trying to do it directly on more than one occasion, and suffering for it. In this respect, Kagura is quite different from Naraku. She’s much more likely to fight her own battles, and appear directly on the battlefield even while she’s scheming and manipulating, making her a braver person than her creator. She covertly aids others (Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha most notably) in the hope that they’ll kill Naraku for her, knowing full well how much of a risk she’s taking doing even that. She slips off and offers Sesshoumaru shards of a powerful jewel in exchange for killing Naraku at one point, and neglects to mention Inuyasha’s weakness to Naraku on another occasion. On other occasions, she simply lets her opponents go after she’s decided she’s put on enough of a show fighting them. Although she’s proud and likes to consider herself powerful, she is still pragmatic enough to know her limits.

Kagura’s more unpleasant traits are a blend of nature and nurture. She hasn’t had a childhood, parents who taught her right from wrong, or even friends. Most of her “family” is even worse than she is - more bloodthirsty, cruel and remorseless. The one and only detachment she actually acknowledges as family and willfully spends time around shows little to no emotion. She regards Kanna as her sister and is never hostile toward her. In fact, post-death when she has become the wind, Kanna is one of the people who senses her presence at some points. She hasn’t had good influences in her life, and going along with Naraku’s schemes is necessary to her continued survival.

Although she speaks in a semi-formal manner sometimes, Kagura has little regard for formalities and authority. She isn’t defiant purely for the sake of it, but she is proud and wants nothing more to be free. She might cooperate when it’s in her best interests, and she can recognize (if grudgingly) when someone is stronger than her. However, she refuses to treat anyone as her superior beyond what she has to do to keep herself alive. Being a free spirit means that she more or less goes wherever she wants. She manages to be surprisingly hopeful for someone in a hopeless situation. She’s quite determined, willing to do whatever it takes to gain her freedom.

Despite everything, Kagura does possess redeeming qualities. She has some sense of mercy - for example, when her fellow detachment Goshinki is told to wipe out an entire village and they encounter children, she tells him to let them go, and when he insists that he’s going to wipe out everyone in the village like he was ordered, Kagura turns up her nose and tells him to do what he wants, but she’s not interested. Vicious though she may be, she has standards. She’s just pragmatic and intelligent enough to understand when it’s wiser to back down or play along. She hides her softer side with grumpiness, hostility and feigned indifference, but make no mistake - that softer side that cares for others is there and it remains there even after she’s died and become the wind. On more than one occasion post-death, characters sense her presence. She’s genuinely appreciative of small kindnesses shown to her. She’s surprised and touched when Sesshoumaru smells her blood in the air, rushes to her, and stays with her until she passes, grateful that she got to see him one last time. She's shocked when Inuyasha won't cut her down to kill Hakudoshi, given how many times she's fought Inuyasha. She appreciates Kagome's invitation to travel with their group, even though she turns it down, saying it would be weird.

Kagura has a protective streak. This is shown with Kohaku, a human boy with a powerful jewel shard embedded in his back that keeps him alive. Initially, Kagura had no such instincts toward him, and was even willing to kill the boy (albeit promising to be mercifully quick) to get his jewel shard. However, she empathized with his desire for freedom, and even when she was fairly indifferent to him, she knew how much it would traumatize him to remember what he'd done under Naraku's control. When his memories have returned and he reveals he wants to kill Naraku to atone, she tries to talk him out of it, knowing he has no chance of surviving. It’s for his sake that Kagura finds her courage, when another detachment named Hakudoshi was going to collect Kohaku’s jewel shard. Kagura realizes how his situation of being someone else’s tool isn’t so different than hers and uses one of her feathers to help him escape, even knowing this betrayal will likely mean her own death.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

Aerokinesis - Air is Kagura’s primary weapon, and she enhances her usage of it with her fan. She can form wind blades capable of cutting through ordinary armour and houses, control multiple tornadoes at once, and create gusts powerful enough to fling a small army of adult males around with ease. Her wind blades can be fired off in rapid succession. She is also able to travel via small cyclone.

Necromancy - Kagura is able to reanimate the dead (or mostly dead people - such as someone braindead or missing a soul) and can make them speak, fight, etc. Her distance limits are unknown, but she’s able to do this from far enough away that characters with a sense of scent on par with a bloodhound at its peak are unable to smell her.

Feather plume transportation - A subset of her aerokinesis, Kagura is able to enhance the size of the feathers in her hair so that they’re large enough for several people to sit on and can utilize this for flight. If she loses consciousness, the feather will revert to normal size. The feathers appear to be part of her, as she never runs out of them and can control them.

Immortality - Kagura has considerable regenerative capabilities, and has been able to survive injuries that would kill even a fairly powerful youkai, such as having a softball sized hole blown through the core of her body. She healed from this in a matter of hours. She has also been around miasma for extended periods with no ill effects at all that would quickly kill humans. It took being impaled with large spikes (ie. wider than an arm) in three places and filled with a concentrated dosage of Naraku’s most potent miasma (which is not only toxic but also highly corrosive) to actually kill her, but even that only destroyed her body after a prolonged and painful period. Her spirit lived on in the wind.

Superhuman traits - Like all youkai strong enough to take a humanoid form, Kagura is stronger, faster, more agile, and possesses better reflexes and senses than even a human in peak condition. Her most impressively superhuman traits are her stamina and durability. Even when in excruciating pain, she’s able to stay upright and move (and even fire off an attack or two), and it takes quite a lot to damage her in the first place.

INVENTORY: Just the clothing she was wearing right before being killed. It will be fully intact, with no holes or blood.
